Monday Night Listening Seshjawn – Memorial Day 5/31/21
Travis – 80’s disco with cool synth, orchestral strings and a sick bass player + lonely hand clap. The electronics sound like modern Prince keys and then have some ensemble sounds layered in. Art feels deceptive like it could be newer and just great absorption of the sound palates. Nice rhythmic break at the end and sound collage + poem. Weird – Travis never fails! Sault “Fearless” – New and cool
Bart – Clifford Jordan “Black Betty” A favorite of mine from Clifford’s amazing Leadbelly tribute. Few things sound like this joyous, driving in a Mingus way and raw in a Clifford Jordan way. Yay Bart! Clifford’s tart sound is one of those primal tastes matches the cherries I’m eating. Bart says “Happy Birthday Tootie Heath”
Anawim – Rita Lee “Mania De Voce” Nawi plays this album around this time of year. Amazing lush Brazilian Pop, 70’s saturated silk. Really breathy flute and a crazy vocal break, synth bass is appropriate but I wish for a crackling groove to make it more nasty.
Dan – Andrew Cyrille “Soul Brother” an early love of mine & particularly for Hannibal’s amazing solo. Cyrille has brought me to so many beautiful musical places, he’s like a massive river sprouting creeks and life through a land. I saw him at the Village Vanguard with Walt Dickerson and was astounded.
Rich – Lost Girls “Losing Something” Slow Build? Amazing synth work, bass lines & layers. Definitely in kind to Rich’s electronica vibe great song to drive back from the airport at night to. A little creepy in a good way.
Chris – Old Sesame Street “Making Crayons” So good to have Chris back for a Sesh. Immediately he brings nostalgia and mirth + more amazing synth & bass lines. Watchable not savable on Youtube.
Mike – Joyce Moreno “Zoeira” Light Brazilian bounce. Perfect light way to end a nice evening of tunes. The album is titled Hard Bossa and its fast for Bossa but I still wouldn’t define it as hard sounding light and direct she kind of soars above the music.
John Storm Roberts was a fan and student of the musics of the world and he created a label “Original Music” which he presented an amazing treasury of recordings particularly of African guitar, Dance bands and highlife. Here is a little collection of what I found on Youtube.
