A short crew, everyones having issues with their sharing and we are all tired. Had a great visit in Princeton yesterday. I had a major score at the Record Exchange – loads of fun and pancakes!
Rich – G.S.K. – Squid – Evil groove then a sort of Johnny Rotten proclamation over the top… Unexpected and good energy. Has some sort of twisted “Spy Hunter” type riffs. The sound creation is at a high level and layered nicely. Surprise ending!
Dan – Onzy Mathews – Dallas Blues: A swanger! Featuring an incredible raw alto solo by Clifford Scott. From his “Blues with a Touch of Elegance”. Bart requested something with “The Joy of Life”
Bart – Bobi Cespedes – “Lenu” – Deep Cuban live performance. Lots of incredible layers and interesting how they feel disparate yet all are completely locking. It feels like there is a tremendous amount of space but its a lot of musicians and they are all playing! Amazing.
Dave – Spring Heel Jack – “Amassed” – Freak Out! Pots & Pans. Sturm & Drang. Flotsam & Jetsam. Good textures then goes into some 70’s Miles directions but spacier. Scared Pete out of the session.
Travis – Amaro Freitas – “Norte” – Melodic dissonant piano. Maybe ECM, sounds possible, and we were discussing it earlier though it just got funkier than ECM does. Little kaleidoscopes of melodies. But it also sounds like it needs to erupt into improvisation and it hasn’t.
