Travis – “I’m gonna do my usual” right in on a bass/horn line and then Funk layers, sort of Afro-funk but not really. Fun. Lots of horns and then a “Fantasy Island” bridge. Ballsy though – I love the background to the solo – Tuba? Nasty….. The solos deliver. Maybe not actually lots of horns but creative loops and recording instead. Sick groove throughout too. Moses Boyd “Rye Lane Shuffle” – new to me and new 2018.
Bart – Herbie Hancock “Driftin’” – King Freddie – I don’t know if Bart said it out loud but it is one of his favorite Freddie solos. A popper. Dexter’s solo is incredible too, hints of “Willow Weep for Me” in there. Freddie’s bell like sound is really more somber than the popping clip of the melody, but in a very singing style. And Herbie just crackles. Some of his solo gives me an idea of how Miles might hear a modern Red Garland aspect in Herbie’s playing.
Nawi – Eydie Gorme & Trio Los Panchos – “Mala Noche” Nawi goes for the complete reset. Her voice soars and the whole recording sets a perfect mood. Sunny and warm. Nawi talked about getting this record from his Dad but having lost it.
Dan – Juana Molina “Sin Dones” Love this entire album Halo. So many loops and layers, and she has a really unique taste in sounds. It’s a new favorite and I haven’t even started digging into other albums of Juana’s yet. Also despite her creativity the album has a completeness to its sound palate that the best albums have.
Rich – Joni Mitchell – “Hunter” unheard before by us…. Part of the 50th anniversary release promotional materials an unheard recording of this song. We discussed a lot of the recent Blue hub bub. How brilliant Joni is, this song seems reasonable as to why it was left off – not as unique or different than some of the stronger songs on the album. Still Joni.
Mike – Beck – Sea Change – a favorite… Such a beautiful album, really glows but in a fading way. I can’t really listen to Beck’s funky musics anymore but I love Sea Change & Mutations. The quiet, serious ones? I really fell into this one and the Dichterlieb at Temple around 2004?
