Peter – Ricky Lee Jones – “Pink Flamingos” – This was always an album I wondered about and noticed in many collections. I wondered about Ricky generally too. Who is she? What’s her appeal? This sounds very loose and rootsy, but then it kind of solidifies and she sings with more affectation. The sound and the production are great, but sometimes a little too perfect. Some interesting choices, sliding harmonies into unusual spots, flexible time and some interesting instrumental layers. Guess I want to hear more.
Rich – John Hassell, R.I.P. – “Ba-Benzele” – I just listened to other John Hassell when he passed yesterday. He is someone I want to learn more about. Though sparse and sort of minimal he has a lot of rhythmic drive to everything I’ve heard. This one has a laid back feeling and the intersections between the electronic, the programmed and the acoustic really works. He can somehow evoke the traditional music yet with an incredibly loose interpretational feel.
Dan – Hossein Alizadeh – “Ney Nava” – I’ve been holding this one a bit but Jon Hassell’s trumpet and the Ney have haunting similarities. Decided to go with it. I return to this gorgeous piece frequently, it reminds me of my friend Mandana.
Bart – Sounds like Dave Douglas with some roots group playing a sort of Americana that fuses Jazz, Folk, Country and whatever is laying in the road. Sweet and lyrical. I don’t think it is Dave though, not the trumpet sound. The shimmering guitar rules and the trumpet sounds like Bart when it goes into the solo, or things he would choose to play. Glows. Ron Miles – “Illuminator”
Nawi – The Mothers of Invention – “Ian Underwood Whips it Out” – Nice! Free Jazz we were in a gentle place. Now wake up! This is live and has a great energy to it. Reminds me of Elliott and that Zappa has gotten a lot of play on the Seshjawns (5X?).
Dave – Starts out like sounds from a movie. Ken Nordine. Hard to write about it when you’re trying to figure out what it is….
Travis – Goes full Euro Pop superstar. Sounds 70’s and with a full orchestra 70’s. Short & sweet. Francois Hardy – “Viens” – 1971..
