Summer of Soul

Maybe it is a little confusing, but is 2021 the year of Soul? Or rediscovering lost Black American artifacts? Different than my early 2021 Facebook posts lauding the amazing musical, socially and cultural significance of the PBS show Soul! This time it is “Summer of Soul” produced by Ahmir on HULU, reveals the 1969 Summer concerts in Harlem that were a counterpoint to Woodstock.

Amazing performances which capture a key transitional moment for Stevie Wonder’s career and loads of great Sly & the Family Stone.

I had 3 misty moments:

  • The 5th Dimension describing their feelings about playing for the Harlem community, but consistently being confused musically as white people throughout their career.
  • A man in tears when his memory of the event was restored after imagining it throughout his life as a dreamlike vague memory
  • and Sonny Sharrock just destroying everything!
  • Also it continues to revive my childhood crush on Gladys Knight…. Highly recommended.
