Nawi – Is it too early for a mash up? Nope… Nawi false starts. He’s mixing Braindrops & Tropical F%#* Storm? Weird drunken trip I won’t be able to recreate… Abort! I got no clue but this is a cool song. TFS – “Aspirin” (Nawi’s instructions: btw, to get the count right on the mash-up, start Asprin 1st, then start “Streets of Rage” on the 1 + of the 3rd measure)
Pete – Jorma Kaukonen “Water Song – Pete sending me a water song for my list. This one is no lyrics though so not exactly a fit. A nice solo guitar piece like a Kottke of Fahey vibe. Peeps is unaware that Jorma was in Jefferson Airplane or Hot Tuna. Made me want to play “Coming Back To Me”
Bart – Grace Slick solo “White Rabbit” – Her voice is way cooler than I thought. She really has commitment to the song ,which lyrically I don’t or wouldn’t have been able to be. Bart jumped in to link this to Pete’s song.
Travis – Interesting starting and stopping rhythm. Definitely feels international. Tart horn section, sort of AfroBeat-ish without the Baritone dominance. Amazing drum break. Menahan Street Band – Make a Road by Walking
Dan – Ellen McIlwaine – “Underground River” & the original version by Fear Itself. I’ve been obsessed with her and this song this week. The idea of the underground rivers of her mind is really powerful. That the song is about meeting Hendrix is also cool. The earlier version is so weird rhythmically, probably 2 drummers.
Rich – Something pretty. Sounds like glass or ice until her voice comes in. Her voice is warm and the harmony has edge. The weird bass intrusions really work for me. It’s building up nicely and subtly, lots of good production choices. Sharon Van Etten – “Afraid of Nothing”
