Seshjawn Notes 8/9/21

Playlist

Rich – Starts out by playing a bootleg from a concert at Tanglewood this past weekend! Lucky us. The 1st piece starts with some sort of cyclic breathing tones that sound synthetic but are acoustic (this is actually the entire 1st piece). Then the 2nd piece is a swirling wind ensemble. Yes these folks have long wind. It’s orchestrated to sound like no breaths but they are layering the winds and probably adding some circular breathing. Elliot Carter – “8 Etudes & a Fantasy from 1950” – His orchestration concepts are way ahead of the time period – both sounding synthesized and using extended techniques to produce some really great effects.

Travis – I don’t know what it is, but its funky. Watergate? It is not a Gil Scott recording, but if he was doing a fusion style funk band, similar vibe? An open Melodica solo throughout the 1st 1/2. The drums are carrying this for me, the bass too (upright I believe, but in a perfectly electric setting) great vibe and hook up, maybe the bassists album? The rest sounds kind of thin, and the vocals are difficult to decipher because you need ignore the groove. Nice Bass & Drum solos at the end, but the end cuts off weird. Weldon Irving – “Watergate—-Don’t Bug Me!” (he is the keyboardist)

Dan – Atoms For Peace “Ingenue” Thom Yorke’s side project. I love the more electronic side of Radiohead and this fits in that category. Whole album has a wonderful collection of sounds and grooves. I didn’t really pick my favorite song from the album, but I guess this is the most popular song from this album. I guess I’m disappointed this project didn’t continue, though Yorke’s other solo projects have always been interesting.

Nawi – Upshaw sings Golijov – “Tancas Serradas a Muru” – No idea what this is, where its from or what’s going on… Really cool though, horns, drums driving with almost a Samba drum wave feeling, sort evil sounding Eastern European meets Tejano vocals and maybe a train-like chugging accordion?! An Argentinian composer so maybe those themes make sense. Really cool and hard to decipher where it was drawing influences from.
