Seshjawn Notes 8/23/21

Playlist – The one where Dan overstays his welcome with a double song hole…

And just a couple of thoughts on my collection in this age of digital music.

I re-organized my this week, I have typically Record Stored my organization because I worked in Record & Comic stores when I was a kid. This time though I tried to present my favorites and make the things I listen to the most accessible. Partially to encourage my daughter and guests to find these wonderful treasures.

Over the years my interests have changed – I have my favorites, favorite artists and then lots fo label collections like Blue Notes, Mosaics, Savoys etc. And then some regional or stylistic areas like Brazil, Africa, Fania and vocalist recordings etc.

I really enjoy having recordings I can see & touch.

I’m a collector, as well as a fan, a musician, a composer and a teacher.

Also found this closet classic of me & Bart performing w/ the Warriors + Odean Pope & Dave Liebman!

Dan’s Song Hole #1 “Se Voce Pensa” (playlist)- Roberto Carlos (the composer) this is kind of a cheese ball version and I find something missing in the actual tune itself, it is somehow incomplete. Elis Regina’s (The version that pushed me into the hole) her voice is so powerful, just soaring over the hot “Spy Who Loved Me” style band. She sings fast so articulately and is just a consummate performer elevating the song. Gal Costa’s version has an amazing bass sound and some of the dirtiest sounding horns I’ve heard in awhile, stealing that sound! Moraes Moreira never heard of him, but this is a great proggy Allman brotheresque version. It comes from an amazing album. A positive reward from the song hole! The lyrics (the translation of) are about telling someone if they want to be with you then they need to tone their shit down and enjoy the simple things in life.

Travis – Drops some Out/Drum & Bass loop stuff on us. Says it was the coolest thing found listening to Spotify… It’s got beats & looping juxtaposed against the free-ish soloing which is effective in disrupting any potential monotony from either side of the music. Great ending! Bloto “Oset” from Poland!

Bart – Asher Gamedze – “Hope in Azania” Some nice African style Jazz, but I don’t recognize it. Sweet horns, such a different approach to saxophone sound from Africa. This sounds potentially South African to me, probably new, but it also reminds me of some Abdullah Ibrahim recordings from the 70’s. Great ride cymbal sound, shimmers. Love how the bass line changes at the end, great idea and transformation of a repetitive cycle.

Dave – Sam Rivers – “Configuration” A favorite! Written by the guitarist on the recording. Reminds me of Mike Taylor whom loved it when we performed it at a gig about 15 years ago. Dave’s the only other person who I’ve met who has this recording though. Which is funny because he said he mistook this song for “Beatrice” when that was called on a gig – that would be a funny situation! Sam Rivers at the Painted Bride (around 2002?) was a memorable show!

Dan Song Hole #2 (playlist)- Jeanne Lee & Ran Blake – “Where Flamingos Fly” co-written by John Benson Brooks who is really interesting composer. Also included is “The Loop” from his “Alabama Concerto” which has similar chord changes as “Giant Steps” from the year before “Giant Steps” came out – featuring Cannonball Adderley & Art Farmer

Back to Jeanne Lee & Ran Blake – just a perfect version for me harrowing, spacious and music that has a profound effect on me.

Rich says “Chris Potter is the Billie Eilish of the Jazz cognoscenti…” Bam! And we all learn how to pronounce cognoscenti. We think we are getting Chris Potter, whom I often don’t respond too though I think he is an incredible musician.

This song starts out with flute and some sound collage which is unexpected. He is a great saxophonist but not really in a style I usually connect with, though some of what he plays is evidently sick. This is an interesting setting, a very challenging mix of electronic and live playing. It’s often jarring and I like that it keeps surprising me. Interesting, great solo but it is still not connecting with me. “Nowhere, Now Here/Sunrise Reprise” from Chris’s most recent release.

Nawi – Duke Ellington – “Caravan”- by Juan Tizol 1952 – What a marvelous creature the Ellington band was. Great sounds here and solos Ray Nance & my favorite Jimmy Hamilton. Beautiful ending to a great seshjawn. Happy Anniversary Nawi and Allegra!
