Seshjawn Notes 8/30/21

I’m back to work!

And Autumn is coming quickly.

Sad to hear of Lee “Scratch”Perry, Larry Harlow and Charlie Watts’s passings.

Bart – has been thinking about Ida. Randy Newman – “Louisiana” I feel like someone has played this before at the Sesh. But it wasn’t topical. My sister Sarah stopped in Asheville before returning to NOLa to wait out the storm. It feels hard to get accurate information about the damage done in the wake of Ida but, like Katrina, it makes me miss New Orleans. My sister is a great singer, in these bands: Bosques Fragmentados, Painted Honey, and  Smoking Time Jazz Club. She is a peach, check her out and help NOLa if you can. Ahh “Sail Away” is another Randy Newman song that sounds like this one, maybe that was played at a previous Sesh?

Nawi – “Chuck” (We all agree good guy) sent Nawi a record in the mail. Witch – “No Time” This is an African Rock band I’ve heard about before but never actually heard. Great groove. It is from the 70’s, a little raw but still has the bright, sunny vibe in a lot of African traditional music. Cool song too, extra sections with strong melodies. Infectious groove and some nice fret work.

Dan – Marvin Gaye – “Is That Enough” From “Here, My Dear”.  Marvin’s divorce settlement album which I love. It’s grooving, painful and desperate at the same time. Marvin is highly underrated as a composer and auteur. He reminds of Miles Davis channeled as a pop R&B artist here. The layers are constantly unfolding, dealing and revealing joys. And his lyrics are dark and contemplative. Great looping bass part too. Marvin always has great, memorable saxophone solos in his music.

Travis – Blind! As Travis does. Spooky…. Very desert Arabic but I think it is going electro! Yes…. Echo… Echo.. Echo. Also there has probably been a synth lying underneath it the whole time I just “misheard” it. Cool. Wonder where we are going. The traditional players sound authentic but something weird still. All of a sudden a very aggro dance hit! Also very multi kulti in a Don Cherry spiritual way. Yup, just twisted  into a more improv direction with a vicious soprano sax solo. And all of a sudden maybe the soprano is one of the traditional players? Maybe a Bill Laswell produced adventure? Jaubi – “Raga Gurji Todi” Apparently the soprano player goes by “Tenderlonious”!

Dave – Plays a Blues, he thought it was the last Monday… But it’s not. String Trio of New York w/ Oliver Lake – “Texas Koto Blues”. From the album “Frozen Ropes”. Sick combo. I love Oliver and this is a great and creative setting. I had the opportunity to play with Olive once. It was a realization of a few of my young person dreams. Also, long time fan of World Saxophone Quartet. Fabulous ending! Ahh not the ending, the ending before the ending… Sorry. This ending is good too.
