Apologies, I’m getting these notes out pretty late after a busy few weeks, Finals at Rowan Monday so the Seshjawn is displaced a week until Monday 12/20/21 to finish the year!
Travis – Some fusion funk, cold open! Ooh, weird vocals, I have 2 possibilities to follow this track up with some weird vocals of my own. This is more in the Zappa odd timing category weirdness rather than the mathematical style. I like the chilled out section a lot. I’m feeling this is newer, though sounding very 70’s – that has been a constant theme of the seshjawn for a few weeks “old or new?”. Weird ending…. Magma “Floe essi “la fille de la mer””
Dan – Hasaan Ibn Ali – “Body & Soul” – This blew my mind yesterday. Just hearing Hasaan playing standards helps me understand him better. Amazing that these were just released. I’m just playing about 6 minutes of this and I didn’t realize it was 13 minutes long when I picked it. Nor did I notice. I just submerged into the little side trips he explores.
Rich – A cold open for Rich, interesting Jazz sample that is refracted by the beat and then cool layers. It has a little Acid Jazz thing – the initial sample is too evident in a sense like = we all thought it was that actual song before the beats and instruments happened. The arrangement is really cool though I’m not sure if I feel it is connected to the original piece. I’m guessing this is a homage in some form? But I like it. Makaya McCraven “Wave Bait”
Bart – Playing some sweeping weirdness… I like it kind of a mish mash a little Sufjan Stevens if he went full weirdo electronic. A little Dirty Projectors-ish too the way the layers fit together. Great ending! https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/open-arms-to-open-us Ben Lamar Gay “Open Arms to Open Us”
Nawi – Itsuroh Shimoda – “”Everybody Anyone” I recall this popping up in my Youtube feed and wondering about it. Good atmosphere. I like hearing pop (folk) sung in other languages, the melodies usually take unexpected turns too. And I like imagining what something is about, what words are being used without understanding them. This is a cool track, now I’m wondering if an entire album would be?
