Matt – Welcome back Matt! Sounds like a vocal loop but also maybe natural? Like something African or trying to evoke something African. Matt said he “liked it conceptually” which makes me think it is new, but the voices sound like they were recorded and then perhaps manipulated which could mean old recordings then altered. I’m wondering if this is going to be on youtube… I am trying to remember something about a woman who was using experimental vocal techniques and recording techniques, maybe this is her? The singing parts recall some things like early Zap Mama. Inuit. Canada: Melodic Katajjait
Bart – Maybe a Country Jazz feel? The rippling arpeggios. Beautiful sound with so much being achieved through dynamics. Sad trumpet sound, feels like the entire thing is the trumpet players conception. This type of music is not far from Bart’s heart yet it also reminds me of something Matt would play with his Aerial Photograph. I don’t think I’ve heard the trumpet player and this is Frisell-ian but not tones in an order that Frisell would play. Nadje Noordhuis – “Indian Pacific” – Her Bandcamp!
Travis – Travis seems to be echoing Matt’s vocal rhythmic game approach. But this is more of a collage of loops and sort of Sesame Street feeling…. But then it gets funky. Which somehow makes it all align in an expected way. Pretty weird, yet accessible. Another recording where I wonder how it was recorded? Piece by piece? Layered? Sampled? Live parts for sure but certain parts feel very personal and others like they were snatched from a commercial or something. Vazytouille ► Du Jour
Dan – I’m playing an assorted collection of Tony Scott. He came up a few weeks ago when bBart played a version of “Lush Life” and Tony did a double album of “Lush Life” versions, solos, duos, quartets, him singing it, his daughter as a child singing it after hearing him play it every day for over a decade. And these tracks I’m playing are meant to show his range and that is without including his musics for Zen Meditation. Here we listen to a solo “Three Short Dances for Clarinet”, a quartet blues called “Blues for an African Friend” to hear him blow a bit and a moody piece “Requiem For Hot Lips Page” featuring the Bill Evans trio before their lauded Village Vanguard recordings. Scott had a very interesting life worthy of investigating.
Rich – Clinky. I don’t know if it grows on me. I want it to breathe in a different way. There is a 90’sness to it, maybe how her voice is recorded. Big Thief – “Time Escaping”. I am mixed about this track, most of its features are things I like and the layered groove is interesting but I I don’t find enough contrast and the voice is mixed for me. It needs something that cuts it up somehow.
Nawi – A 90’s jam. Not one I’ve heard though. Sounds like Nawi sing talking. Pretty infectious. Nice interruption. Funny I feel like I’ve heard this skit before. A movie. It’s Pavement-ish too. Maybe moments of Folk Implosion. Basehead – “Plays With Toys”. I recall this album cover and think I listened to it, maybe that was my recognition for the skit? Probably an album I popped on at the Disc-Go-Round (Guess there are a couple of those babies hanging around) when I worked in retail.
