Seshjawn Notes 1/3/22

Play list

Arca!

Rich – “I’m gonna talk about a bunch of things and then play something else.” – And something else it is, something like mutated Caribbean Dance Hall. I like. It has lots of weird layers and is creative but highly recycled? It’s hard to tell where it’s from, sometimes African sounding, then Arabic and then Latin. Possibly an integrated creative partnership? Two songs here, both cool and skittish at the same time. Totally need it. Arca – “Prada/Rakata” & “Lethargy”. **That video is some crazy SHIT!

Travis – Travis continues with the Electronic vibe. This is more spacey, drum & bass. I feel like it keeps losing a segment of a beat somewhere, but I can’t locate it. Nice vibe and interesting “solos” on top but also too repetitive for me right now, great for grooving or running. Planet Battagon – “IxION”

Peter – Plays some Cow Muddy – “Sisters & Brothers”. I like Michael’s voice a lot and there is a big 90’s Rock feel to this. This recording feels roomy, maybe its just the upload Pete has but the drums feel far away from the band. This is from Peter’s studio and unavailable for the playlist.

Dan – Eno Moebius Roedelius – “Base & Apex”. A late 70’s Eno collaboration that seems like a band. There is not much in the way of lyrics, but it has a collection of interesting songs and they unfold thoughtfully. This has a particularly cool groove, but sort of flowing despite the repetitiousness. It made me think of Chris Dippolito.

Nawi – Dave Dzubinski missed a short Dave Burrell clip which is too bad. Nawi came through with a clip from the old Sax Choir, at the Knitting Factory with Dave Burrell, that has been missing forever! And then he launches into some Ofra Haza – “Shecharchoret”. Intentionally contrasting Dave’s wildness. But all I can think of is that gig, what a memory! Me, Nawi & Matt were all up there and it was a unique moment, I’m grateful to have played there and always grateful for a part in Odean’s music.

Jeff – Welcome my friend! Of course he drops a bomb on the Seshjawn with his first song play. I don’t know who? It sounds like they are playing trash cans, but in a sweet way. Lot’s of space and splashiness. An Elvis Costello type of song, the style and the production. I can almost place the voice? There is a lot of restraint in this. Which is really difficult thing to maintain and also this band had to play together a lot or it would fall apart. It doesn’t though, living on the edge. Joe Henry – “Heaven’s Escape”
