“April in Brazil”

mid-late 60’s

Folks, in April I’m embarking on/enjoying a sonic journey through a considerable amount of Brazilian music that I have been acquiring.

A love of Elis Regina, Bossa and ultimately wanting to learn more about Tropicalia has lead me to scooping up any recordings I can find from Brazil, primarily during the 70’s.

Early 70’s

I have a solid Jazz/American perspective on Bossa Nova but kept finding surprising and amazing recordings that were less available or known here.

This listening tour will focused on more late 60’s to the early 80’s recordings, particularly things influenced by International Pop Music.

I got lucky at Princeton Record Exchange and found a cache of Caetano Veloso and then again at Philadelphia Record Exchange with a diverse batch of Brazilian record label releases.

later 70’s

I’ve padded those with a few from my own collection, a couple surprises from Long in the Tooth, and some new reissues from the Brazil’s Treasured Masterpieces Collection.

I am going to create a map and follow a loose, chronological listening path.

Randos

I will post a weekly update and have at least my favorite song from each recording in a playlist to check out.

Join me if you like!

Best, Dan
