Chico & Ennio

Dan – The badness of Ennio! I did a cruel 4 play, or a 2 play with 2 earlier clips of the same song to offer an example of the Ennio Morricone effect. In this case a 1970 album of a meeting of Brazilian singer songwriter Chico Buarque and Ennio. Apparently Chico is part Italian and went to Italy I believe in his time of exile from Brazil. The original songs sound great and are perhaps recorded, or remastered, better than the Ennio versions, but his unique arrangements offer a sense of space and have an incredible flavor. “Não Fala De Maria” & “Funeral de um Lavrador”.

Bart – Plays us a video of Ruben Blades with Wynton and Lincoln Center playing Salsa. Ban Ban Quere – Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis ft. Rubén Blades. Long conversations follow about our Wynton feelings, but we all agree this is burning and he sounds great. I recall this event and think at some point Lincoln Center (& Wynton) aggressively began to promote these cross-cultural events, making them features and also sort of countering Wynton’s earlier publicized attitude about performing non-Jazz music.

Nawi – Junior Murvin – “Police & Thieves” – Video and fabulous. One of the perfect songs and sounds. A Lee Scratch Perry design and Junior’s voice is just perfect. I wish these two had somehow connected with Philly International records Gamble & Huff and just went crazy together. I could hear this song in their world and then some of theirs easily slipping into Lee’s world. Wild!

Rich – Animal Collective –  “Car Keys” – I already like the weird mix, layers and tones. It’s hard to focus on one thing in this creation. I do feel like it would reveal itself with repeated listens and I wonder if I would retain the sense of wonder I find in this listen. Some of the unpredictability is attractive, perhaps there are layers to reveal with more attention. Rich thinks this might be his favorite album this year and thus returned to it a second time to play this for us.

Travis – Weird. Big drum intro, then some gnarly guitar and then some vaguely Gregorian Pulse Funk Wordless? Vocals…. And then ultimately not really that weird, except for the vocals. Possibly could be weirder, sort of dance metal? Maybe this a Ministry type of thing? Beats and gnarly guitar stand for a lot in my book. Moin – “Lungs”
