Nawi – Hepcat – “Right On Time” – Nawi soliloquies about his love for Ska & Hepcat, but also that he didn’t know they were still active until he found this disc in the $1 bins. I know the feeling “For a $1? Why not.”. In fact I’ve done the same a few times recently and he is right this is worth a $1. I can picture it in his rotation around the pool this Summer. Perfect tune for that and it’s already redeemed it’s cost.
Dan – Hania Rani – “Home” – This song has really stuck with me after 2 intense, and rather difficult, weeks. It’s an outlier in her recordings by having vocals, most of her music is more piano/electronics seeming, sort of minimalistic, but with great shapes and contours. This song is haunting and discovering its delights grows with frequency.
Rich – Something 80’s sounding, but maybe something created with a lens of the 80’s. I like it, dry snare, “Stranger Things” synth pads and it feels like something I lost in my childhood. Glad to find it now. Had a strange little interlude/reprise at the end. Arcade Fire – “Unconditional II (Race and Religion)” ft. Peter Gabriel.
Bart – Bart’s playing some Jimmy Rodgers. Singing the Blues (and yodeling). I love Jimmy Rodgers and think of him as one of those key figures at the heart of the similarities between Country and Blues Music. At their heart they are just culturally different expressions of folk songs. Jimmie Rodgers – “Blue Yodel 9” (with Louis Armstrong and Lil Hardin Armstrong)
Travis – Sounds like some 60’s Hippies! But far, far away…. Not anymore. Full Caveman once they drop the beat. But it’s less trippy when it repeats, aah there it is. Takes right off for a skronky solo, over some pseudo Latin fusion groove. Now I’m saying: “Not 60’s Hippies” but maybe Al Di Meola fans? It’s getting really hard to trust the dates of creation, as even the recording can be in the style of a particular studios sound. Travis’s selections typically cross these lines of old? Or made to sound old? This song is actually old. Quantum Jump – “Alta Loma Road”
