Travis – Starts out with a surprise violin cadenza. It seems like the song is going to let it rip in a second…. It takes an interesting harmonic direction with stop time horn breaks. Jaunty and vibrant arrives. It is more traditional musically than I expected at the beginning. The lyrics sound potentially bawdy or jest-full, though I am not sure what language is being sung. Some ensemble accelerandos towards the end, and then some theatrics to build the frenzy, a cheek popping solo at the end?! The Klezmer Conservatory Band – “Rumenye, Rumenye” Live
Dan – Teaspoon & the Waves – “Wind and Fire” – Amazing groove! + amazing synth madness + fun Afro-Pop horns = infectious! The entire album is really joyous and bouncy. It veers between Afro-Pop, Reggae and Pop tho sometimes it mixes them like in this song. There is no info to be easily found but Teaspoon Ndelu is South African and this album cooks. I ordered it because it was a “man with horn” cover and I like to explore those – this rewarded.
Bart – Maybe Brad Mehldau? The intro sounded like Randy Newman, lol! I do feel like I have heard it before. Brad Mehldau – “When it Rains” – From Largo which I do have but I haven’t went back to my Mehldau records in a while. I did see him in concert a few years ago, with Joshua Redman, but it wasn’t really my thing – though they both are astonishing.
Bill – John Swana & Orrin Evans – “I Want to be Happy” – “Ortlieb’s Playlist” – The song isn’t individually shareable, the playlist link has it and other recordings from the CD – go check out the music from a specific time & place. I remember the musician’s discussing these recordings and the certain air of an achievement in capturing a scene in Philly. A scene, and a place, that have since transformed into something very different. When I moved here Ortlieb’s was “the place” to go to hear Jazz in Philly and this is a great representation of it.
Myself, I didn’t play at Ortlieb’s much and I wasn’t part of that scene. I had a great time playing there with Puzzlebox at some point in the aughts. I saw a life changing Odean Pope trio show there when I first began studying with him. And a killer Cecil McBee Quintet concert with Matt Wilson and James Zollar back in the Sweetnighter days. I will always remember the Philly home feeling at the McBee show when I realized Jimmy Heath was hanging out at the next table watching the show! Good times.
