Seshjawn Notes 10/17/22

Playlist “The 49 Edition!”

D’angelo

Nawi – Weird proselytizing with a hiccuping beat, then it slides into it something more snug. It almost sounds like a Prince song but recessed beneath the beat itself. The beat is landing with a herky jerky bounce. Definitely Prince influenced but its own thing. This beat sounds like a late 90’s Hip Hop groove – maybe a little of QTip’s “Vivrant Thing” but speed up. D’Angelo and The Vanguard – “1000 Deaths” A recording I missed and now I will amend that neglect.

Bart – A modern Alto player. Very clipped approach, with a warm, non-nasal tone. I’m saying this is a recent recording, there is an everything at once clarity that sounds new. The song could go into a Latin feel at any point, stay Modern Jazz, or go in other directions. Right now they are just holding that place rather than venturing into one direction or another. Dry Cymbals! I think I want the piano player to stay longer in some of the places they are visiting, instead of fleetly running past them. Lots of chops tho. It never goes fully into the Latin thing, it just lives there simultaneously. Mervin Toussaint – “Lakay” – The Philly young folk! They are doing alright!

Matt – Randy Newman – “God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind)” The “house” chose the depressing cut from Matt’s selections, my selection is twisting in the wind right behind it. Depressing or Too Real? I’m into it in either case. Randy maybe Matt’s most frequent Seshjawn artist played? At least 2-3 times (tho Bart has possibly flung a RNEW track in there as well). I appreciate Randy, he is a great songwriter, I enjoy the songs I have heard, but never visited Newmanland otherwise. I do appreciate the occasional visit of his witty songs and thoughts.

Dan – Linton Kwesi Johnson – “Song Of Blood” – I’m still loving this song, but my memory of the beat is much more profound. I was possibly listening to it last in the car, my bass is in your face there. Now I am wishing I played one of the rich and vividly poetic LKJ tracks, but this still has some deep vibes to it and features LKJ at his most political. It follows the previous track well too.

Peter – Some new Math Rock group. Definitely a mastery of instrument, and musical sounds, but nothing really sounding that personal, it wows with effortless execution. I find the element of surprise missing from music this defined. It is also too metric, making it feel dry with no pocket.  There was a time where I was here for this kind of thing but that was long ago. Polyphia – “Ego Death” feat. Steve Vai

Travis – Travis goes un-Travis and just plays us a crazy song, instead of something Funked up. Still noticeably Travis-obscura and I don’t recognize it in any way. Sounds to be older but Travis has tricked me many times before, it could be new looking backwards. The drums and finale are both really unusual. Dennis Wilson – “Time” – The Seventies, the epoch of singer songwriters getting Beatles (or Beach Boys) freedom in the studio to create – glorious!
