Bart – A newish trumpet player. Clear toned and sneaky chops over a bass groove thats keeping it down. It’s kind of a grumpy tone on the trumpet, not a bad thing more of a Hat & Beard vibe. I’m not placing it, though I would say its a quieter player – the ambience of the recording is close up, in a Miles/Sinatra style. Starts at 38:01 – “Play It Momma” by Marian McPartland, Dave Douglas, James Genus – I thought Dave but the setting threw me, sounded like someone trying for Dave’s vibe, but it’s the real thing.

Dan – Pedro Santos – “Quem Sou Eu” & “Desengano da Vista” – A two-fer from the same album. The only bad thing you can say about the album is it is too short and too mysterious about album information (who’s playing what etc.). It’s another Mr. Bongo reissue, that is now a “purchase whenever I see a Mr. Bongo release” situation. Pedro Santos has too little information but some of the unusual sounding instruments on the album are of his creation, but I have found very little about those. He was a popular percussionist but this is his only recording as a leader, deserving of more opportunities in my opinion.

Travis – Horse Lords – “Mess Mend” – the guitar kaleidoscope reminds me of Pedro Santos’s instrument from my first track. It sneaks in and out of tune in percussive ways. Working dissonantly by wrapping it in rhythmic form and yet still sounds like a weirdo Blues somehow. I wonder how they coaxed this forth, it has an improvised loop feeling, like trapping moments of infinite possibility and giving them form. Yet I think that this also very playable, it doesn’t sound designed in the same sense something digital would and has a minimalistic quality without flowing that way overall.
