Travis – Cool tune. Feels like it could be an early 70’s Sesame Street type song (Which Travis also remarks about in the post song convo!). And it reminds me a little of Wendy & Bonnie (which Travis also hipped me to at another Sesh). It has really long phrases, they kind of stretch out and give a breathless quality. Great ending! Shira Small – “Lights Gleam Lonely”. We all wonder who Shira Small is, and find she is from the area, with this recording from her time in Newtown, Pa. This is THE album too, her only release – which I listened to and enjoyed in it’s entirety today.
Nawi – “Keep it the 70’s” Nawi says. Pacific Gas & Electric – “Are You Ready” – I’m not. It’s very Hair feeling, but if with Bob Seger. I can’t decide if I’ve ever heard this song before? Many times songs from certain eras “feel” like you’ve heard them before because they embody characteristic sounds of that time. I LOVE the Guitar tone! Also Travis literally flinched when he saw the cover! Poor hodgepodge of inappropriate choices of a cover….
Dan – He Toa Takatini – “Pokeka O Te Taiaha” & Psychedelic Furs – “Wedding Song” – These 2 songs segued nicely for me when I was checking into which song to play tonight, so I kept it that way – double play. The first is a Maori chant, from a wondrous collection of them. Though this track, with its sinking vortex of phrases suggesting a whirlpool, is very different than the others on the collection. I found it haunting. I also found “Wedding Song” to haunt me. From the first PF album and very different sounding to my ears than the rest of the songs on the album. Though Richard Butler’s voice is pretty iconic to me and recognizable. The beat and abrasive timbres do it for me. It sounds much later than 1980. The boyz suggest it is a drum loop, which I hadn’t thought about. Very early for that type of thing as the first drum loops in popular music are from the Bee Gees in 1977.
Bart – Dr. John – “Life” – Bart and I have been chatting about some New Orleans’ musics lately. Possibly because he was just there. Possibly because I’m visiting my Sister (Happy Birthday Sarah 1/24/23!) and taking Ruby with me to NOLA in April. Possibly because NOLA is just floating about in the air as is its want. I recently watched (& loved) the Documentary Bayou Maharajah about James Booker. Dr. John was featured in the film and then this Funky Mfer of a song completes the circle, affirming some of the Booker in the Dr.’s playing and singing. The track we listened to is @ 29:29 of the live recording.
