Seshjawn Notes 2/20/23

Dan – Hector Lavoe – “Periodico De Ayer” – Initially this tune sounded sort of simple and then the Brass work and Disco Strings sections really transfixed me. Unusual dissonances, unusual because I don’t really expect them in these places, and the way the sections are blending together really made it more of unique.

Bart – Woody Shaw Quintet Live in France 1979 – “Stepping Stone” @ 1:21:00 – Woody is the best! So rhythmically adroit, virtual every song and solo captures me. Carter Jefferson is revelatory here. Some cats maybe shine live more than on record, because I haven’t heard him cut through the music like this before. I’m assuming the entire concert deserves a listen.

Brian – Slim Harpo – “One More Day” – Welcome Brian! And his selection gets right to the root of it all. The timbre of the harmonica, and electric guitar, here will forever be a mystery to me, I can’t fulfill my desire for it. Simple, but raw, and real. The Blues.

Travis – Travis does his F%*! around and find out style. This is the type of song I’d like to play and wish I wrote. It’s sort of a simple idea, but it works like a rollercoaster and takes you on a ride. The Alto player is triumphant and I find a lot of joy here. Andrew D’Angelo – “Gay Disco” – The title fits the energy of the piece, but alas I doubt this song would actually be played at any form of Disco.

Dan #2 – Arthur Russell – “She’s the Star/I Take This Time” – This was recently rereleased and recommended by old friend Jeff Schwachter. I guess I missed it but this is a very progressive and unusual solo experiment using looping/ echo techniques on his voice, cello & percussion. The songs are a bleary mix that sound far ahead of its birthdate. Arthur is a musician worthy of digging into his unusual path & history.
