Seshjawn Notes 3/6/23

Playlist

Bart – 2 sides of one song. Pretty piano, I already love it. But I do not recognize it. That’s all there is too, just a sweet little piano ditty. The second version is The Lumineers – “Patience” a video and it sounds the same as the 1st, but underwater. And I’m like: “So that’s the Lumineers hun?”. It’s a half speed version of the first (original) recording and the video matches all those things: slower, underwater, dreamy.

Travis – Wild, I’m not even sure what’s going on! 70’s TV show with monster guitar orchestra? Black Midi – “Sugar/Tzu”. Everything I have heard from Black Midi is like this: maximal, too much to take in on a first listen and extreme technique. I wonder how I will feel after processing it many times, but the initial feel is like flying down a mountain side and I enjoy feeling swept away. Their art and videos match the feelings I described above.

Brian – Derek Watkins – “We’ve Only Just Begun” – A Seshjawn Newbie plays a song and trumpet player I’ve never heard of before and affirming an epic Seshjawn playlist. The selections keep jumping and it’s all new to me, which is why I host these events. Watkins has a rich sound, effortless technique and here at least, no fear of the cheeze. His style is not reminiscent of the other major trumpet players I am a fan of either. I am interested in exploring his career and hearing different examples of his playing.

Nawi – CTMF – “Failure Not Success” – Something nasty and 90’s sounding, like Iggy Pop from that era. We could use more bands whose singer sounds like they are sneering. This seshjawn keeps turning, never heard of this crew either. Good song and sound, that differs from what it followed in our evening.

Dan – I’m dropping 2 older Middle Eastern Pop/Rock performances.

Devil’s Anvil – “Besaha” This was an amazing find from 1967!! I really love the groove and the raw feeling. They are New Yorkers but of Middle Eastern ancestry, only this one album though.

Baris Manco – “Donence” (1982) – Initially I got the Baris album 2023, which was a sort of Psychedelic Pop album about a science fiction future happening this year, but written decades earlier, and from a Turkish perspective. Picking one song from that album just didn’t work, I would recommend hearing the whole thing. This song is also on a different wavelength, there is a lot of restraint, patience, and then just fantastic rhythmic sophistication. Definitely featuring some Disco and Cheeze influences.

Matt – I should know this but I’m not placing it. A perfect ending I would call it, to a seshjawn which darted around with new sounds that abound. There is a Parker quote, but the recording feels more like a Tatum scenario. Matt said he was surprised about whom it was, which suggests that this is not their usual bag. Hank Jones – “The Night We Called it a Day”. I do know and own this, Hank’s first recordings as a leader Urbanity. Hank is one of the most underrated cats, and also versatile, he is a master as a vocal accompanist, solo, duet, trio and in a variety of classic larger ensemble recordings. Here he sounds more Art Tatum-ish then I expect but its early on in his career and in a roomy format. He sounds great. Thanks for that reminder Matt!
