Nawi – Jim Morrison as 80’s English New Wave? But it doesn’t sound like that on the chorus. Hugh Cornwell – “Looking for You”. My observations were pre-reveal and Hugh was a member of The Stranglers, who have a much longer career than I recall. Thus they were sort of accurate though this is a new album, The Stranglers were at least involved in the 80’s if not New Wave. This is a good, mysterious song with a bit of nastiness and cool guitar sounds.
Bart – Cab Calloway & Jonah Jones – “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love” – Many things I find riveting about this live clip. Cab’s lip synching (?) it’s imitating the trumpet, not vocals, so I’m not sure what to call it, but amazing! I’m planning g to show this video to the kids (I teach), who will love it, Cab is always a crowd pleaser and weed smoker. Jonah’s singing was a surprise, and why not Cab singing? Jonah’s trumpet is an all day thing of beauty, bright and brassy! Plus there are a couple of wild splats, around 2:04, that are trumpet sounds that blow my mind.
Dan – Gnawa – Hassan Hakmoun لمعلم حسن حكمون Zahar on Nightmusic 1989 & Gnawa on Fire كناوة على النار – An old (the Zahar on Night Music) and a new track from Hassan Hakmoun whom I discovered when I purchased a Knitting Factory CD release, Zahar from ’92. It is an incredibly intense and explosive album, but not on YouTube (there are some copies on Discogs for reasonable $’s). The newer track is also amazing but Hassan seems to be more traditionally focused where the earlier recordings (and ones from Woodstock ’94) have shredding guitarists and a Rock/Gnawa fusion approach. That style reminds me of Mdou Moctar and the Ali Farka Toure & Ry Cooder collaborations, but I think he pre-dates either of those wonderful groups. Hassan seems like he was a catalyst, and an innovator, but I missed the message until now and highly recommend the rhythmic joy that these tracks deploy.
