Notes for a Seshjawn for Rich

Playlist for Rich

Our friend, & fellow Seshjawner, Rich Moskowitz transitioned last week, he is riding the Spaceways!

Dan – Milton Nascimento – “Cais”, Elis Regina “Cais” – I hold songs for Seshjawns, for when particular guests arrive and this pair was on hold for awhile, not only for Rich, but I was sure he would connect with it. These 2 versions form a palindrome together with the 2 sections flipped, I heard the Elis Regina version before Milton’s original and just recently found this live version from a MPB TV Special which is worthy of watching in it’s entirety.

Cais by Milton Nascimento (Translation Pier also translates a “Quay”)

“For those who want to let go

I invent the pier

I invent more than what loneliness gives me

I invent a new moon to brighten

I invent love

And I know the pain of throwing myself

I wanted to be happy

I invent the sea

I invent in myself

The dreamer

For those who want to follow me

I want more

I have the path for what I’ve always wanted

And a pickup ready to leave

I invent the pier

And I know just when to throw mysеlf”

Nawi – Sun Ra – “Lanquidty” – Nawi brings some Rich type of Seshjawn plays and had wanted to do a hang with Rich and listen to his rare Sun Ra recordings. This one is amazing and I recall hearing it before, initially thinking Rich had played it at a Seshjawn before but realizing I have the album too (& a good selection of Sun Ra rarities myself). The song forms, and dissipates, like few recordings can manage. Though it is from 1978 I kept imagining it was something new that loops and samples and older recording. Incredible vibe and feels like some Lo-Fi pre-Hip Hop track.

+ Dirty Projectors – “Swing Low Magellan” – Rich also played several DP recordings over the seshjawns and thought highly of their music. This is also something I have, though it makes me want to return to it as I never connected with it on my initial listenings and this a cool, if atypical recording of theirs.

Matt – Matt offers us this as a “Whose playing” type of play, and mentions he feels it is an out of character performance for the pianist. One featuring incredible restraint, you can tell anything is possible with this pianist, but they are supporting the guitar and focused on feel. – Oscar Peterson –  “These Foolish Things” – The verse being included threw me off and certainly the performance is not OP’s usual display of virtuosity. I’ve been enjoying the OP Verve sessions a lot recently, he is a player I always enjoy but rarely have turn to. We are all a little surprised about how long his career was, he is coming on in the late 40’s but feels like a 50’s player – though stylistically attached to the Swing era.

+ Joan Shelley – “The Fading” – Rich would often play singer/songwriters (and usually female ones) during our seshjawns and this song is fitting and beautiful. We don’t know much about her, but I thought this was a much older recording than it is.

Bart – Zombies – “This Will Be Our Year” – Another fitting song. I never quite connected with the Zombies but this track makes me want to revisit their music. I am also shocked that they are still active and releasing new material! Bart speaks highly of them and Colin Blunstone’s voice is memorable and worthy of digging deeper.

This was a fitting Seshjawn for the loss of a friend whom embodied the interests and principals of our engagement.
