Rich was a true friend.
Although I knew Rich casually for over 20 years, we attended many of the same concerts (Ars Nova Workshop, Aerial Photograph or similar things I was involved in) we really became friends during the pandemic on the Listening Seshjawns that I write about here on Found Sounds.
We forged a little community and as the fear of the pandemic receded we hung out un-virtually: going to Princeton Record Exchange and spending a particularly fabulous 4th of July Jamming at Nawi’s. A little over a year ago Rich receded from the Seshjawn scene with undisclosed health issues. About a month before he passed Rich reached out to me when I was struggling with some things. He explained what he had been going through and I felt like my problems were small, but all of our problems feel big to ourselves. I started to plan a Seshjawn @ Rich’s (and bring him some of my food, a promise we never fulfilled. And I debated getting him to the upcoming Peter Gabriel concert. These plans were sadly not to be and with a surprise exit Rich went to explore the next place. I hope friends, family and people who would like to recognize the impact Rich had on our lives can join us for a moment of remembrance.
I will include memories of our shared love for Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Sun Ra and the wide array of Musics we listened to at Concerts & Seshjawns. His drumming and thirst for improvisation. His appreciation for my Mary Lou Williams Zoomcast, my “the Best” Garden window box, my culinary arts, his faux mean-critic act at Seshjawns, how he stated “I can hear the music from the words” about my Seshjawn Note writing and his “I liked the crazier-shit best” comments for my Ghost Book solo concert at the High Wire Gallery in a Risk-Taking Type Music presentation 15 years ago.
“As I drove into the sun
Didn’t dare look where I had begun
Lost among echoes of things not there
Watching the sound forming shapes in the air”
