Brian – Purcell – Reginald Mobley & Brandon Acker – I became addicted to this piece last year, I was using it for teaching in a classroom. Brian went to school with Reginald and he is equally addicted to this piece, so we discussed it last year when I discovered it and he already knew of it. In fact, I feared that I played it at a Seshjawn already but this is not the case. It’s exquisite and accessible, the students reacted to it and all were entranced by the beauty of his voice and the Theorbo.
Travis – Wow! Sonic boom! Travis was keeping this in his back pocket? Then the song turns Zappa-esque. There is a lot going on here: Out horn solos, metric shifts, Zappa signature Xylophone playing, ruminative jazzy chord progressions. As per usual, with Travis’ plays, I can’t decide if the song is truly old (synth sounds and writing style say yes!) or just sounds old and is immaculately retro. Hermann Szobel – “Mr. Softee” – And vintage!
Matt – Some popping Afro-Pop. Warning live bass! There has been a pervading sense of “have I played it before?” which Matt has, but this is fresh. The riffs, and parts, feel familiar in a been sampled kind of way, also they feel good so that doesn’t matte. They could be the deriver not the derived. LIJADU SISTERS – “Orere elejigbo”
Bart – Blue Notes – Live in France 1964 – Sounding very Monk. Seeing them play live is a surprise, and it is a cool song, though I can’t find a title. I have a lot of the later Blue Notes/Chris McGregor music which is fiery and freer than this track. I would like to hear the horns solo and one less run through of the longish melody. But great to see Louis Moholo, Nikele Moyoke, Johnny Dyani & Dudu Pukwana play.
John – Henry Cole w/ Miguel Zenon Quartet – “Tipico” (Drum Solo) – And a hell of one too. Lot’s of interesting Tom work, which makes me wonder if he is preparing for a gig with Peter Gabriel. It makes me want to hear the entire song too, tho I understand going for the edit, I’d like to hear the context of the solo within the song, and Zenon’s writing is always interesting.
Dan – Accordion 3fer – Boozoo Chavez – “Oh Ho She’s Gone”; Luiz Gonzaga – “Sete Meninas” ft. Dominguinhos & Dominguinhos + Hermeto Pascoal – “Juazeiro / Asa Branca” – I’ve been on an Accordion trip. Particularly how it is used in Brazilian music, so funky! The Boozoo track rules and I love the “Go Home!!” lyric. The 2 Dominguinhos tracks are both incredible. The concert track has such a good groove and the duet is just an example of the highest level of musicianship. They both are very free and yet brilliantly musical people.
