Travis – Japanese psychPop… Cool and dreamy. Everything Travis plays has a certain sensibility of interesting layers that are distinctly recorded, regardless of style or substance. He should have his own radio show and be performing more than he does. His is a unique ear. Great submerged ending. Cornelius – “Sparks”
Dan – Meshell Ndegeocello – “Cool Water” & “ASR” – I’ve been heavily rotating her new album and these 2 songs, which feel intentionally paired, feature Jeff Parker on them and were my play tonight. I’ve maybe already moved on to new favorites on the album. I love it, it feels cumulative, collecting the various strands of her song writing styles over the years and adds some fresh World Music influences.
Nawi – El Limon – “El Puqueno Turbo” – Interesting DJ mashup, but I am having difficulty finding what exactly is playing – the music? the dj? a record label? the clip is thin on info and in Spanish though a lot of the music sounds like Afro-Pop. You don’t have to know about to enjoy it!
Travis – Los Destellos – “Para Elise” – Spanish guitar, groove based “Fur Elise”. There is a tone quality thing with Electric Guitar that I am drawn to whenever it is achieved and this recording feeds that fetish. Here the sound is plucky and bright, an early Rock & Roll tone, it works though there are many variations of Guitar sounds that do the same job. Fun.
Dan – George Benson & Joe Farrell – “Beyond the Ozone” – Very Fantasy Island. But with an insane Benson solo. This was a surprisingly soft album compared to the organ combo vibe I was expecting. I am following the Soul Jazz muse lately and somewhere in the late 70s Jazz, Funk, Soul mixed with Pop Disco and the roots of Smooth Jazz were formed and popularized by Grover & CTI. This album is one of those roots. “Back when they used to make Benson & Hedges” quoting myself, a shout out for the tasteless cigarette box cover.
