Seshjawn Notes 8/14/23

Playlist

Dan – Art FarmerBenny Golson Jazztet – “A November Afternoon” – A live gem from the Jazztet Mosaic collection. The tune is impeccable with both some beautiful Gil Evans-esque harmonies and interesting bass melodies, yet achieved in a small group. Art’s solo is a thing of beauty and that is why I played it, a little treat for Bart’s Seshjawn return.

Bart – BIMHUIS TV Presents: SHAI MAESTRO – (11:00 – 17:36) – A jaw dropping performance. I know none of them, Shai Maestro’s name would have had me avoiding it all the way, but totally impressive. Bart’s into the trumpet player and he seems to effortlessly/endlessly be spinning a line. I could never remember all these lines, there is plenty of improv here, but also a through composed feeling melody. Wowzers.

Travis – Incredible production and guitar work. I feel I should know it but I’m unfamiliar with the language of these players, they may contribute to some popular songs that I am familiar with though. Impressive musicianship, great guitar/bass work + a little cheese too. – Dixie Dregs – “Fried Funky Chicken”

Dan (again) – Horace Silver – “The Aztec Sun God” – 70’s Horace is under appreciated. There are some iffy vocal harmonies that I have come to enjoy, despite their maximum cheese factor. This is one of a series of Silver + instrument families albums, in this case Silver & Percussion. I had another, longer, selection from the same album, which featured Horace’s amazing trance-like funk solo. Both songs are part of the same suite and Ron Carter’s bass sounds immense here!

& Robbie Robertson – “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” – Very 80’s Robertson (& Daniel Lanois), but still an album that mattered to me in my teens. The crazy voice is one of the BoDeans. Despite the layered synths I like this song a lot. It has a Tom Waits vibe going and then an interesting Chorus with that funky BoDean voice. It felt like a good way to remember Robbie’s music, despite some of his Band songs being better examples of his craft.
