Seshjawn Notes 8/28/23

Playlist

Travis – It’s got the insane musicianship, but layered against a total beauteous little tune – frequently those cancel each other out. And it goes a lot of different places in style. The bassist is prominent and pretty herky jerky. Elephant Gym – “Witches” This will deserve further exploration.

Bart – Boney M – “Rasputin” – Weirdness! & Disco. Perhaps top 3 strange things ever on a Seshjawn. A fond memory from Bart’s childhood? I never heard this, or heard of this, but it is on Top of the Pops so apparently popular enough. I think Nawi will love this when he gets a chance to listen. Also, a truer Beardo (Beirdo?) has never existed.

Dan – Toquinho – Chuva na Praia de Juquí & Nara Leão – “Mamãe Coragem” – I double play, 2 Brazilian songs that really got me over the last few weeks. I love hearing Toquinho’s guitar language, familiar but a different assimilation of sources. And the Nara Leo is an album of Brazilian Pop Orchestral magic, plus her voice is haunting, particularly on this song. She sings some instrumental like sounds that trip me out, loads of reeds throughout the album and the echo-ie percussion sounds like a Spaghetti Western.

Bart – Beatles – “Rain” – A second play because Travis mentioned not being a Beatles guy at the beginning of the Sesh. Bart threw this one out as evidence of greatness and a nasty bass line. Not sure Travis was moved.
