Seshjawn Notes 9/10/23

Playlist

Travis – Stevie Wonder – “Stranger on the Shore of Love” – A later Stevie that I don’t have, many of the 80/90’s albums I ignored, but even lesser Stevie is still Stevie! I am not a fan of the canned synth sound he’s getting, mainly because he is the pioneer of incredible synth work, but everything played is pretty banging. Strong song too, but I expect nothing less.

Dan – Tom Brock – “There is Nothing in This World That Can Stop Me Loving You”

The Sylvers – “I Remember” – I also was going for Soul tonight, how did Travis know? We are having a secret sidesesh Soul shortie! My choices are 2 Mr. Bongo “I know nothing about” releases, and what I got were 2 lost Soul classics. The Tom Brock is clearly derivative of Marvin & Curtis with Delfonics influenced production by Barry White. Amazing album, the playing, particularly the snare sound, are impeccable.

The Sylvers were a Jackson 5-like group. This tune has the darkest bass line and an interesting take on Pop Soul. Beautiful arrangements on both albums and they offer a lot, I’ll play them frequently. I suggest Carte Blanche with any Mr. Bongo releases, buy whatever looks cool from them and enjoy.

Travis – 24 Carat Black – “Synopsis Two: Mother’s Day” – A short outtro of weird Funk, as an aperitif. Travis found some of the sounds here reminiscent of the music we played tonight, tho more in the Funk department!
