Seshjawn Notes 10/8 & 22/23

A double seshjawn notes, cause I have been too busy to keep up properly but 2 shorties make a proper playlist.

Playlist

Dan – Minnie Ripperton – “Completeness” – This album, Minnie’s first solo album, floored me. Adventurous, experimental, incredibly performed, perfect arrangements. I hear things on this song that suggest Kate Bush was familiar with it, certain vocal harmonies and even just how she uses her voice. I can’t recommend it enough. There are a few familiar songs and several that have been richly sampled from.

Bart – Dr. Alimontado – “Best Dressed Chicken in Town” – Jamaican weird is some of the weirdest weird there is. It never abandons the groove though, so it works. It’s dub-ish but using the sounds of the Roots Rock Reggae to get there.

Travis – Carla BleyGary Valente just calling everyone up! We didn’t listen to the entirety of this track but it was certainly commemorate her passing. This is really beautifully played and I tend towards Bley’s larger works, her writing really shines with players to write for. There is a wealth of Bley’s music left to explore.

Bart – Otis Rush – “I Can’t Quit You Baby” – From the opening “Well” you can feel it. It almost stopped time or felt like the clip got stuck, but digital don’t stick. This is that smoother, easy groove Blues that reminds me of B.B.. Love the “trill” strumming solo, rhythmically building tension until it washes out. Then some classic, clean, single note bending. I’m not as familiar with Otis Rush but I know he influenced a lot of the classic Rock guitars.

Dan – Golden Wing – “Hear Me” – Indonesian Psychedelic Heavy Rock. I’m enjoying the entire collection “Those Shocking Shaking Days”, but the Bass & Drums are here! It sounds very Sabbath to me, but using the organ changes the feel – still pretty sloggy, but brighter.

Travis – Allan Holdsworth – “Water on the Brain pt.2” – Very precise and cleanly played, I’d prefer a little more dirt. Also very complex. This is Travis’ answer to Bart, and my, challenge to the mystery of Holdsworth. I’m not sure it stuffed me in the bag, but it is solid and powerfully played.
