Travis – – Travis is going in a rock direction that one of my 3 possibilities for tonight also leans. Contrast or corroborate? He also said I’d know the voice. It sounds familiar but nothing I can nail down. It’s bringing a 70’s, slightly Southern, grooving Rock feel. Honky Tonk piano, screaming guitars and such. Jack Bruce – “You Burned the Table” – Bart guessed Bruce correctly and Travis mentions that he felt a need to explore Bruce’s works as the one to keep from Cream – maybe so. We all agree he made some of the most interesting career choices.
Dan – Johnny Jenkins – “I Walk on Gilded Splinters” A Dr. John song played in the Alabama style and featuring loads of Allman Brothers connections. Including Duane, Jaimoe & Butch Trucks. Great groove, very sampled (Beck) and its got all the hoodoo you might need.
JFK Quintet – “Hominy Grits” – Andrew White and Ray Codrington’s early works, produced by Cannonball for Riverside. Traced Codrington’s trumpet from Eddie Harris to this fine collection and to discover the Andrew White documentation became the boon of the bunch. They both sound amazing and are maybe 18 years old here, coming out of Howard University. The playing is some tipping, but leaning out, vibed originals & a few standards. There are more bombastic White solos on other tracks from the album, and a few unusual, challenging compositions, but I wanted to use something Bluesy keep people guessing.
Bart – Verneri Pohjola – “Space Diamond” – A little Seshjawn tribute to our friend Patrick Hughes. Moody and breathy trumpet with a subtle and essential electronic presence. This is brand new, but the trumpet playing and tone of the piece make for a nice call out to our friend after his transition. I guess Verneri is Finnish and one of Bart’s favorite trumpet players.
Nawi – Playing some 90’s? Rock thing, sounds like Ian MacKaye. Not Fugazi, but has some similarities. Lungfish – “To Whom You Were Born” – I, like Bart, feel like I should have heard more from Lungfish but don’t remember why. Solid Jams.
