Seshjawn Notes 11/19/23

Playlist

Bart – David Bowie – “Sweet Thing” – A really slow live version. I’m guessing it is a late 70’s Rykodisc extra track. Bowie’s voice is so raw and there is a lot of tension in the slow pace. The baritone is really growling and the guitar sound is all edge. Sanborn too, at his peak and its the Philly Tower show. Amazing band and they really go into some different dimensions with the songs.

Travis – Scott Walker – “Hero of the War” – Bowie leads Travis to Scott Walker. Neither Bart, nor I, is familiar enough with Scott Walker. This song is cool and I recall when Walker passed, (around the beginning of Covid & the beginning of Seshjawn, Seshjawn is totally Covid spawn) that people suggested there were similarities between Bowie and Walker. I don’t really hear that, though they both definitely reside in a Psychedelic Folk Pop style at certain times in their careers.

Nawi – Sounds like an Elvis Costello song that I don’t know? Cool one, sounds really 80’s synth oriented and with less venom in his voice, yet also a fresh complexity in the song construction. It also has a sort of Afro-Pop bass tone, which gives another layer to the 80’s hodge podge sound scape. Maybe an album I have. For whatever reason Costello has been on my mind lately, I find him sort of insufferable now, but I love his earlier works.

Dan – Pivi et les Balladins – “Samba” – From Authenticite: The Syliphone Years a collection of music from Guinea. There is a second song from this collection that I want to play at a Seshjawn, but I love the groove in this track and the energy of the singer. The collection is a long retrospective and had loads of good early music, but the slightly later Pop influenced songs were my favorites.
