Nawi – Some Ry Cooder from Nawi. One of his collabs, but not one I’m familiar with. The guitar is seething, and drenched in reverb, gorgeous and more surf like than I’m used to from Ry. Looking at his collaborations, and the scope of their timing, he is truly critical to the Popular success of World Music: Blues/Roots, African, Indian, Hawaiian, Ireland, Cuba. It’s a really expansive list and he seems to always be genuine in his approach, highlighting the collaborators, and an obvious fan of the music they are creating. It sounds like Film music too, which he has contributed some of as well. “Drume Negrita”

Dan – Slide Hampton – “Chop Suey” – Burning and intense, with great solos. Everyone in this band sounds different than I expected them to sound, and everyone is killing it. Joachim Kuhn, NHOP and Philly Joe, right down the line, all sound magnificent. I was particularly struck by Joachim’s playing here, I didn’t know how intense he could be. They sound like they have been listening to the classic Coltrane quartet, but in a fun to play way, rather than derivative.

Bart – Drops some dub-like reggae on us. Dub-like because it is more of a band sound than studio created, but it’s got a dub feel. Both funky and positive vibing. And this one features a fuller soundscape than the typical dank, dub track with some live flute, the funk bass and more layers under a chant like vocal. Cymande – “Zion I”

Bonus cut – Dirty Three: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert – I didn’t play this during the session, but recently went to my first Solar Myth show – Zoh Amba and was pretty taken with drummer Jim White. I didn’t realize he was the drummer for Dirty Three, whom I saw at the Upstage about 2?! decades ago. Instead of explaining how they sound to Bart I played a track but this may be more representative of a great band and a memorable show. Jim was playing really cool rhythms within the freer context of this show. Also, I may be too old to stand in the dark for 2 hours now and I was in a continuous loop of running into “long time, no see” folks, including someone I wondered if I would ever see again – struck me right in my heart, and felt like they never left it. I ultimately left the show nostalgic and intent getting back to playing more.
