Nawi – Led Zeppelin – “The Crunge” – Classic beat. This really reminds me of 1989. I was deeply into LZ, learning guitar. I came from Hendrix and was segueing to Prince a year later, but I’d go to sleep every night to a Zepp album in 89. I can’t imagine going to sleep to music now at all and with Zepp the thing is: the groove always counts, Bonham plays fat beats. This song is a great example of that groove. I believe “The Crunge” was influential in titling my own song “The Creesh”, though not musically influential.

Dan – Jackie Byard – “New Orleans Strut” – I’ve been holding onto this one for awhile, awaiting a Dzubinski visit to the Seshjawn. Here he is, so here it is. There are legends of Byard’s playing and one is the historical progressions of style in one solo, which this is a recorded example of. Byard starts far Out, introduces the Blues and takes it through a variety of Blues moods – Stride, Boogie, Modern Modal etc. And none feel inauthentic. Then he brings it back. There are a few pianists that remind of Dave and something about Jaki spirit does.
Dave – Matana Roberts – “As Far As The Eye can See” – Outsville! I’ve been waiting to hear this album. So many chose it as a favorite of last year and I’m unfamiliar with her work. It is always interesting to me to here new examples of improvised music and here Matana gives it direction, and weight, through the poetry and added lyrical meaning. I wonder how similar the rest of the album and project are to this.

Bart – Adriano Celentano – “Prisencolinensinainciusol” – Proto-Italian Gibberish Rap. I love it can’t even figure out what’s going on, but its beautiful. I imagine Bart secretly listening to this at work, hunting for only the strangest things to pass the time. And the video is worthy of a Fellini dance number which adds heft to the slightly vapid, but hi-stylish, song.

Travis – Travis stays electronic too, but in a sleepy 80’s way. Anthony Hobson – “Omicron” – It’s short and also weird. He seemed to be triggered by the previous play (which he was previously aware of, Travis’ listening scope is deep!) and ends us with something that segues well from Bart’s selection. Another interesting Seshjawn evening! This one was older than it seemed, and more obscure, very little info on A.H. to find.
