Seshjawn Notes 2/26/24

Playlist

Travis – Joe Liggins – “Drunk!” Humor night perhaps? I have a handful of songs like this on my backup list. Liggins rocks it and the lyrics take riff based Jump and Blues in an appropriate direction. Jump music always had a humorous bent and I like when they are talking strange or forbidden subjects and treating them with conventional wisdom. People can still party to this song, and should.

Bart – Something new. Sparse, sweet and latin. Daniel Prim – “San Juan Tiene Congoja” Bart stays admirably current, often bring something fresh to the Sesh. This has a new but casual sound, modern music but in a traditional setting. It creates the feeling that you are in the room with the musicians, who you happened upon. The spareness of the recording gives it an open room feeling, but the drums occasionally sound boomy and take over a few of the moments. The Old/New vibe is a good one – one I search for.

Nawi – Metallica – “Orion” – Nawi abruptly decides this is his play, after initially throwing it on during a discussion about great sounding recordings. I think I said I remember Masters of Puppets sounding foggy (not in a bad way). When Nawi put it on it was sort of impossible to take it off because of its badness. Brings me back to ’89 and sounds remarkably inoffensive today. I recall the resistance people had for Metallica (aside from the Metalheads & pre “One” time period) yet this sounds so clear & musical to me now, I can’t really imagine why it was disturbing for some.

Dan – The Magnetic Fields – “A Chicken With It’s Head Cut Off”, “Long Forgotten Fairytale” & “Promises of Eternity” – Early in the Sesh, it came up that the group was unfamiliar with the Magnetic Fields and I felt responsible to change that. I chose 3 songs from 69 Love Songs both because they are great examples of the band’s sound, but also because the nature of 69 Love Songs‘ brilliance, for me, is that Stephin Merritt is spinning song after well crafted song, in an adventurous, literate way. He has great lines in most of these songs. I had a Spring/Summer where I listened to these songs constantly, finding new favorites on a daily basis. The music revived me and I was excited it wasn’t familiar. I can’t believe I missed it when it first arrived, I highly recommend listening to the entire collection of songs.
