Seshjawn Notes 6/24/24

Playlist

There is definitely some numerology of the beast going on with this Seshjawn date!

Travis – Typical Travis, he delivers (particularly on the first play & always blind). Herky jerky synth trip out. Sometimes it leans into a Soul thing but its a little too weird for all that. Though still maintaining a very smooth and vibrant mood, despite its tricky weirdness. I do want vocals here. I also want to support melodic instrumental music sans vocals too, but I feel like some hypnotic vocal loop would have added something. The drums really shimmer. Apifera – “Bazooka Zoo”

Dan –  Elis Regina & Cesar Camargo Mariano  – “❤Tatuagem” & “Valeiro” A late, and an early, Elis track. On the live clip her time is insane. It is literally drifting, ambiguously as if a cloud, yet the time is always there. It is almost impossible to achieve something that feels so floating yet grounded. Also she commands the moment like few can. The earlier track, a decade earlier, has an incredible introduction and gorgeous arrangement. Elis, one of the greatest and most underrated.

Bart – Mungo Jerry – “The Summertime” Bart delivers a childhood memory song, I have the same memory. Travis gives it a gas attack! Hates the song. I think I have too at some point, but I do remember it fondly from childhood, and also don’t hate it now. It has an infectious, child-like groove. I am just struck by how it is truly a sort of ragtime type piece, really simple too, and yet their band look embraces the 60’s/70’s. It makes me wonder what else they did and what drew them too this kind of piece, which was a hit for them. I’ll have to see if they have other things going on?

Travis – Response song! He plays some dirty, electric, swamp blues to funk up the air. Jerry Reed – “Amos Moses”. This feels like an alternate to Bart’s play, perhaps it is, but I am not sure if it is really meant as a replacement. I’m not sure I’d replace Mungo Jerry with Jerry Reed, but this is a crazy tune too. They both have a certain non-funk funk thing happening, meaning perhaps, not so funky personally, but playing funky? Like the Funk seeped into the recording session, or a particular band member brought out the Funk. Some part of me wants a Mungo Jerry Reed mashup….
