Seshjawn Notes 9/16/24

Playlist

Dan – Rolo Tommasi – “To Resist Forgetting” & “@ Beyond Retro” – I saw the earlier clip online and was riveted by Eva Korman’s energy and feeling. Lately body movements have really telegraphed wether I will enjoy the music or not, you can tell she is feeling it and then the screams are unparalleled. I usually don’t gravitate towards this style of music, but apparently they are my gateway drug. I picked up the new album and find they play with contrasts more now and mix heavy sounding versions of Blonde Redhead, or Beach House, mixed with their earlier scream core sound. Bart doesn’t like that use of contrast as much as I do, but I feel he is using a certain lens which I don’t have. He is feeling that it is sort of cliche – Nawi sort of agrees. I would add that most of the album is in that balance, not just the song.

Bart – Don Pullen = “Capoeria” – Bart wonders if I can guess who it is and states he has been on this song lately, a Summer anthem per say. I start out thinking the prominent Alto player is coming from a South African Jazz background, a little Free too, but I can’t place it. I also felt it was the Alto player’s album, but later the piano has a distinct mix of styles with the somewhat ambiguous Latin feel sticking out. Then again some significant piano technique and willingness to get dirty and I do guess Don Pullen. Additionally Carlos Ward the Alto player worked many years with Abdullah Ibrahim so that was also a connection with the South African Jazz. This particular group/album focuses on an African Latin blend. I never picked up those albums, but everything I’ve heard by Pullen is worthy.

Nawi – Gang of Four – “I Love a Man in Uniform” – The voices and guitar work are instantly recognizable and recognizable as something very ‘80s. Nawi brought up working with a student on this song and leaning into a Reggae feeling with it. I can hear that. We can’t guess who it is, but I definitely know other songs by this band. And even after discovery that it’s Gang of Four, I still can’t place which song ghost is haunting me – I guess the search is on. Great way to end a Seshjawn.
