Seshjawn Notes 3/16/25

Playlist

Travis – Hyperactive electro groove. It somehow reminds me of what I plan to play, but a modern version of it. I’m not sure I even try to guess Travis’ selections anymore, they are almost always recent. This is a man who probably listens to music all day, it could be everything. The song does feel overly sequenced which is holding me back from joining it completely, but very glowing and positive vibes. It is some dank 80’s synth. Harald Grosskopf – “Transcendental Overdrive” (This is why I don’t guess Travis’ plays anymore)

Nawi – Libythth – “It’s My Beak” – WTF! Definitely nothing that I was expecting, yet somehow in the continuum of the Sesh. The video is crazy and Nawi explains that the artist is also the musician and is reliably strange.

Matt – Donny Hathaway – “Jealous Guy” – Doing John Lennon! And its perfect. We talk a little bit about Hathaway and if he had an influence on Stevie Wonder. Initially I thought this was Stevie, but I am otherwise pretty familiar with Hathaways work and this track stands out more to me as Stevie-like than what else I have heard. I also discuss the scarcity of 70’s Soul/R&B albums on CD, you really can find the “Best of” collections and not the original albums so much. I think the 70’s, preceding the CD, were somewhat neglectful for reissue unless the album sold really well (i.e. What’s Going On). However when I do find them I find plenty of interesting Pop/Rock covers in the mix, something that is well shared with 70’s Soul Jazz and Organ Combos. Rewarding.

Bart – Billie Holiday’s head bob is everything. “Dickie’s Dream” live jam. Cooking and joyful with many brilliant solos. The event is only missing Lester Young, who was around on other tracks that day dropping brilliance, but as Bart says there is something different about those days. The rhythm section is driving everything and watching Jo Jones snap the beat is invigorating. I still can’t get over Holiday’s head bob tho.

Dan – Sauter/Finnegan Orchestra – “Wild Wings in the Woods”; Eddie Sauter/Stan Getz – “Night Rider” and Sauter/Getz – “The Sucubba” I got in a deep Eddie Sauter hole after buying the Mickey One soundtrack. It’s some of my favorite Getz playing too, but I really just had to tout Sauter’s touch. His strings are some of the best I’ve heard behind a Jazz soloist and Getz plays freest on these recordings, which I think is inspired by the writing. Really exceptional pieces of Art, the both. I’m including this live thing that illuminates the Sauter/Finnegan approach, very visual and as if they are pitching music for a scene in a show. But the music really draws the attention too much for that. “Midnight Sleighride / Holiday” – Sauter-Finegan Orchestra LIVE – NBC kinescope 1954
