Nawi – Modern Flamenco from Parent Talent Show night… Nawi introduces this that way. Apparently his kid’s school has a serious parent talent show and a parent, an Iranian woman, nailed a Flamenco dance to this song. Nawi became obsessed with the song and brought it to a Sesh. Isn’t that always the story? Martires del Compas – “Sevillanas Billy” + Wonderfully weird album cover!!

This is some Modern Flamenco from about 2 decades ago. I say “Modern” because the song has an unusual structure, I don’t understand Spanish but it sounds like story telling and balladry. A lot of the flamenco we hear in America is of the traditional variety and hearing something that is concerned with the recording studio and incorporating some Pop influences in creative ways is welcome.

Dan – M83 – “On a White Lake, Near a Green Mountain” + “Noise” – I picked up a bunch of my “looking for” list discs a few weeks ago and this had been on my Sesh play plans for a few weeks, since listening to it. The album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (vibrant title too!) was listed in Tom Moon’s 1,000 Recordings to Listen to Before You Die book, and I put it on my “looking for” list, I just didn’t remember why. Then I got it and submerged into its sound world. Really these 2 songs don’t do the experience justice, its really a headphone masterpiece and worthy of full immersion.

Matt – Abbey Lincoln – “Throw it All Away” – Deep song. Abby’s 80’s/90’s recordings were surprisingly great. Surprising because a lot of Jazz from those eras can sound dated ,or poorly conceived, rarely featuring the proper artistic input from the musicians. But Abby’s albums were thoughtful showcases of her brilliance and this song evokes a mood. It features Pat Metheny on guitar, which suggests the producers were trying to get the best musicians for Abby’s albums at the time. Frequently albums from the 90’s suffer from having a collection of talents that do not form a band, here at least this is not an issue. Matt describes why he thinks Pat sounds different from his typical self here and then we gravitate to another important guitarist within the discussion, who Bart was planning to play anyway.

Bart – Bill FrisellGround Up 2025 @ 45:ish – I don’t really know the song title and as Bart explains the entire set is somewhat of a medley with songs flowing into each other. This song, also as Bart explains, is a very typical Frisell riff-based tune. And that Bill has one of these type of songs on most albums. They are sort of melodically anthemic and catchy. This one has an Afro-Pop type of melody and the band sounds great flowing between melody and improv seamlessly.

Travis – Swanky Funk. But weird… Japanese? Or European? Deerhoof – “Return of the Return of the Fire Trick Star” – I’ve heard Deerhoof before, I believe Chris Dippolito played a song at a Sesh before, or at least played them for me. This does not sound like what I expected from them, not in a bad way, and I think they are eclectic so what their sound is, is debatable. This is a very cool song which closes an excellent Seshjawn. Fully staffed and with multiple reactions of “Great Sesh, I want to go and hear more from all of these artists!”. This might be the ultimate goal of the Seshjawn: Hear new things, that open doors to hear more. And converse about them.
