Travis – Some 80’s sounding English band? Probably is an English 80’s band, not sounds like. It’s not quite the Psychedelic Furs, but it is close in sound. I can get there with this. It’s probably more annoying that I can’t place it, I haven’t heard the song, but I think I recognize the band, or the voice. There is also an 80’s feeling in the sound, shimmering, breaking free of the boredom of Modern Life, discovering everything like you are first becoming alive, it is anthemic in its own 80’s way. Kitchens of Distinction – “Drive That Fast” – Hmmmm, I know of this band, but would never have guessed this were them and maybe avoided checking them out in the past. And I guess maybe 90’s but channeling an 80’s sound sentimentality.

Nawi – Le Marelu – “Mora Cantaora” – Hot Flamenco with some Pop touches. Travis and Nawi spar about Le Marelu’s intensity. They have apparently both fallen for her and her vibe. That is a fair response, her intensity is beyond (maybe Flamenco just rides that way!) and I would more warn them of their commitment, because they may not be able to handle it. Perhaps Nawi played something from her at a previous Sesh? He said he was unprepared tonight, with a live performance in mind, but he was hanging in his car for the Sesh! That is some intense commitment there, lets let the Flamenco, and Le Marelu, do their work, raise his intensity. 

Dan – Joe Farrell – “Bass Folk Song” – Incredible band that completely stumps the crowd, no one can guess these familiar artists. I find the groove created by these masters is exceptional. And I feel like I’ve never heard them play together quite like this before. Herbie Hancock gets a little weird, the group careens off in smeared, blend-y directions that his electronic sounds initiate. Jack DeJohnette’s beat feels backwards and forms an infectious pocket. Farrell is focused on his flute, lightening the vibe, but offering a pretty thorny solo. It’s Stanley Clarke’s tune and he drives the piece and pushes a strong pulse. Together it sounds different than their main gigs, it doesn’t sound like their other recordings, nor the bands or opportunities they have had together. The album feels inspired.

Bart – Archie Shepp – “Balm in Gilead” – Haunting and resonant. I have this album Blasé, picked it up long ago, but I haven’t listened to it in many years. I kaleidoscoped through all the versions of this piece I can think of, I guessed Abby Lincoln at first, but it’s Jeanne Lee. Jeanne Lee is a wonderful singer and less known, but not far off from vocal timbre from Lincoln. The restraint of the ensemble behind her voice is unusual for Avant Garde Jazz. It is a very peaceful and calming Spiritual piece, a good way to end our night. I think Bart meant this song as a healing reaction to our World today. We need more of that.
