Peter – The Buzzcocks – “Why Can’t I Touch It” – I’ve always wondered about the Buzzcocks. I’ve heard this on the radio before but never knew it was them. Good song, cool voice, heavy drum beat… I like how at the end they let it breath and just really play their sound for awhile, no lyrics or solos. Creates a vibe.

Dustin – Esbjorn Svensson Trio – “The Return of Mohammed” – The recording is so luscious it kind of oozes together. Smooth in a Guaraldi type of way. The drummer is just perfectly crisp and on time. A thousand ways different than the first track we heard. I feel that the pianist’s sing/humming here is actually accentuating things, something I hate hearing with Keith Jarrett, who is obviously influential here.

Travis – Deerhoof – “Be Unbarred, O Ye Gates of Hell” New album! 1st track. Another group I need to know more about. Very cool riff layers right off the bat. Weird times and lovely disconnected parts that somehow all fit in their places. Cool guitar work. Great ending.

Bart – Max Roach & Clifford Brown Quintet – The Historic California Concert – “Intro/All God’s Children got rhythm” Classic group but with a West Coast Twist. Love Teddy Edwards though he is sounding more like Dexter Gordon here than usual. I like Carl Perkins too, he has a percussive crunch to his touch. I don’t know this concert but love this period of Max. I think he and Miles were doing some similar things with their groups, different results in the end but both captured some remarkable music. Max’s solo!

Rich – Something with Laraaji and Floating Points. Laraaji is cool. I went to a Liminal States virtual concert of his mid-pandemic. This is interesting but I wish it didn’t turn into a whole Jazz thing on top of the Laraaji it sort of gets lost in there. And I don’t love the Jazz part much, even with the circular breathing. Do love the breath recording. BadBadNotGood “Unfolding (Momentum 73)”

Dan – Pascal Coulon – “Nostalgia Tropical” – I snagged this disc from Long in the Tooth Records in my post-B-Day haul. This “Arpa Fusion” with Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz is a joy and learning of Mr. Coulon’s progressive and extensive career was a bright, beautiful hole to drop into. He is a wonderful harpist but he also investigates other culture’s traditional music and mixes in with unusual combos like w/ Kora or Cuatro. Great music to just have on.

  1. I mind Larajji got buried like you noted. What I minded even more is Badbadnotgood sounds second rate here. I do not know much of their music. The album is a bit between Meladu lite and Washington, Grover or Kamasi. I’m being harsh. They are not bad and certainly good.
