Bart – Avishai Cohen – “Art Deco” – The trumpet playing Avishai Cohen, not the bass playing Avishai Cohen. It starts pretty freely and then turns into a very Miles-ish bouncing tempo and lyrical sounding inside type tune. The trumpet is recorded beautiful and breathily. I haven’t really been aware of this Cohen’s playing, probably because I stopped keeping up with new jazz about the time he came to prominence. I think I was randomly in a Barry Harris workshop, a decade and a half ago, with his sister Anat, before she (or he) became widely known. It seemed like there was a cool new Israeli Jazz Mafia on the scene then and that perception was accurate.
Travis – Counters with a dirty, fast driving guitar tune. Definitely some weird Jazzy turns that bely the more Stoner Rock entrance. Pretty mind melting.. . . . . The guitar sound feels like someone I should know, but then musically I’m not feeling familiar with it. Hedvig Mollestad Trio – “Bewitched, Dwarfed and Defeathered” – Amazing title!
Dan – Durutti Column – “For Belgian Friends” – It’s been a Durutti Column week for me. A few months ago someone played an interesting track at a Seshjawn. I had always wondered about the band, mainly based on the interesting name (misspelled but named after a Spanish Military commander). Then multiple Durutti references popped up on Facebook: Vini being someone’s favorite guitarist, favorite song etc. Then I found the song “Otis” and was going to play it at Seshjawn last week, but it got bumped for Charles Brackeen to honor his passing. And I continued listening to their early albums from the early 80’s “Return of”, “LC” and “Without Mercy”*** gorgeous album(s)! Then I heard “FBF” and realized I had heard this song, long ago. I don’t know from where, or when, but I know it. In general I am continually surprised by the decisions made and the limitless beautiful textures . A new favorite. I am so excited to dig through their long legacy of recordings.
Peter – Pete is stalling with a “Playing Banjo for a wild fox!” video. Then Art Farmer – “Little David’s Fugue” – Beautiful Art! He really always sounds good. The arrangement is clearly an attempt at some Miles/Gil flavors, but that is a great setting for him. Farmer is often lumped in that Miles school of trumpet playing, but he is his own player. His sound is similar but his phrases are a totally different animal. Art almost always makes things sound too easy, everything he is playing here is not easy.
Rich – Bowie – “I Dig Everything” – Weird static implosion? Part of the recording? Not sure. Weird tune. Really perfectly played, yet the band is deferential and I find the track laking some sort of excitement. Everyone else seems to like it, but I’m not feeling it as much. Not bad, but it doesn’t sate my hunger for Bowie.
Nawi – El Guincho – “Bombay” – Nawi warns us about nudity (or entices us with). I feel like I’ve heard this song before too, but only little bits of it. But it is maybe a little bits type of tune, very collage-y. Also feels like a quintessential Seshjawn song and video! I’ve seen it before, but where? Song Deja Vu twice tonight, my own play, and now Nawi’s. I love the mystery.
Fun session as usual. Thanks for the notes.
