Seshjawn Notes 2/28/22

Johnny “Hammond” Smith

“Zoom is the new Church basement.”

Nawi, aka Art Scarfunkle – And true to his name he drops the Funk. I don’t know this track, but it is nasty and clipped. Great arrangement, lots of little pockets and layers. Definitely a classic. The horns are crisp and baritone forward. Nawi’s back with his Tower of Power – “Maybe it’ll Rub Off”. Tower of Power is a group I haven’t really done my diligence with. Nawi has thrown a couple of tracks my way that suggest I need to be diligent. Always clean, high musicianship, popping rhythm section and really the epitome of what a horn section should sound like.

Dan – Johnny Hammond – “Big Sur Suite” – Classic sample to start this track, it was used in Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic”, The Black Sheep and a Beastie Boys song. A pre-CTI recording, by Creed Taylor, with an eclectic mix of excellent performers in an unlikely combo: Joe Henderson, Hank Crawford, George Benson, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette. Benson sounds incredible here and Bob James is conducting as well. This piece is a larger ensemble than featured on the rest of the album.

Travis – Talking Heads like. – Some song with the lyrics “Cool Water” in it. Keeping a theme going, as I played “Cool Water” by Sons of the Pioneers before the Seshjawn tonight. It was a track I find very important transitionally, an early example where the studio is trying to create an atmosphere rather than document a performance. This band is definitely creating a grooving atmosphere. Pottery – “Hot Heater”

Rich – Something new… And trippy! Vocally experimental in a Dirty Projectors-like manner. Lots of echoes and distortion. Animal Collective – “We Go Back”. Another group that I don’t know well enough and this track makes me want to discover more. It is also from their newest album. I can thank Rich for keeping me up to date!

Peter – King Crimson – “Sheltering Sky” Live – This is great. Pete is correct in that you can see what Fripp and the others are actually doing in this performance. And he had a cool connective device where he was exploring the book “The Sheltering Sky” by Paul Bowles, which has apparently influenced many a Rocker. KC is a band where I always wonder how they built such an audience despite being pretty strange. Still wondering, tho I do love their work.

Bart – Ends with something like we started but older. It is raw, immediate and reminds me of a song I’ve been holding on to for a future Seshjawn. I find Blues and Rock horns to be a mysterious thing, simple yet profound when executed properly. How to make simple sound good. How to ride your sound. And this is also beautifully recorded itself. Only problem too short and cutting off a beautiful trumpet solo. Dud Bascomb – “Grumpy”

Sorry, I must quote the first line of the Youtube description “Classy Tittyshaker R&B Instrumental dancer. Released by trumpeter Dud Bascomb on the Newark, New Jersey-based label Sharp Records (a subsidiary of Savoy Records) in 1960.”
