Bart – Starts out sounding Reggae-ish to me, but only the opening line and then turns Jazzy in a Zappa-ish way. The vocals that come in make me think this is something from International Anthem, experimental and yet grooving and with an aural sensibility that can appeal to non-Jazz folk. Really interesting timbres in the ensemble sections with the Tuba. Maybe Daniel Villarreal? I say that because of the strength of the percussion. Ben Lamar Gay – “There, Inside the Morning Glory” – I’ve been wondering about this recording (just released) and hoping to hear it, as I follow the IA publicity and noticed the fine album cover. I can usually count on Bart to deliver the new IA teaser!

Matt – Piano trio from a collection. Elmo Hope – “Stellations” – I think I possibly passed this along to Matt for a Seshjawnamas, after getting a collection of all of Elmo Hope’s studio Trio recordings. But I didn’t recognize this piece and had it pegged as a pianist from a little later time. It’s got a really loose, but locked in, swing that is pleasing. Hope is the 3rd Bop Brother with Monk and Bud, so it is interesting to check out and compare his less fiery solo style and his unique voice as a composer. I think his language is more important than history might suggest. I’d like to know more why this was the piece that stuck out to Matt?

Dan – Ray Barretto – “Un Dia Sere Feliz” & “Algo Nuevo” – A 2 fer of late 70’s Barreto after forming a Bass Crush on Sal Cuerva here. I like that I hear Funk, Fusion, Disco and Jazz in the Salsa here. The album is considered a comeback after Barreto, who was injured in a car accident and had a several year road to recovery. I think he probably was swinging for the fences, drawing from popular musics of the time and trying to pull out all the stops. Which when the rhythm section is this tight you can pretty much do anything you want! The Flanger Bass evokes some hints of Jaco, some nice Synth sounds and ripping solos all contribute to the exciting vibe.

Nawi – Agustin Pereyra Lucena – “Consolacao” – Matt and I both thought Luis Bonfa initially, but the drummer actually suggested a different guitarist. The drummer sounds like he’s from a younger era of musicians to me, though Bonfa has had a lengthy career I don’t recall many recordings where he drew from Popular styles. Lucena is Argentinian. I have found a few other musicians from South America but from outside of Brazil, who gravitated towards Brazilian guitar style. There is a aice bright sound from the guitar and recording. Nice, new artist to dig on.
