Seshjawn Notes 3/14/22

Playlist

Nawi – Pieces of a Dream – “For the Fun of It” – Doc Gibbs! This reminds me of a synth medley from the Grammies that I was just watching featuring: Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Howard Jones & Thomas Dolby from around this time 1983 (in 85’ actually & I did not play the weird patriotic ending!?). I was using it as an Electronic Instrument Family example for a class I was teaching and it really spoke to my childhood. Watching everyone experiment with the available technology. This is equally a product of that time, essentially a secret soundtrack to the early 80’s. In a sense it is a step away from a Hip Hop track I keep waiting for someone to hop in and start rhyming.

Dave – A private listen to Dave’s Piano Sonata. He is looking for feed back. Mine is: Record that! So much of it will open up and sing live. The score playing exposes so many moments where I could hear it breathing and building anticipation. Cool effects, that will be better live. Blessed to hear.

Dan – Chico Buarque – “Construção” – I’ve been scooping up lots of Brazilian music over the past few months and I’m planning April as the time to listen to it all semi-chronologically. I found this Chico collection recently, something produced in Brazil. I usually avoid compilations favoring the original albums and complete collections instead. But, I figured at worst I would feel compelled to go find more Chico albums and that is what happened. I had another Chico song “Barbara” scheduled for a seshjawn play but this song blew my mind. Intense build up, BIG horns and then those close, dissonant vocal harmonies. Apparently a very popular song and album and also on the way in the mail now. “Barbara” will wait for another day.

Travis – “Fasten your Seatbelts” T.W. says. Travis is right, it fits as some sort of middle ground in the things we’ve been listening to. Trancey looped Wurl-Jazz with legit horn parts and a sort of Nascimento-ish singer who sometimes sounds like he is not singing words. But the loop is tripping me out pretty good. The beat sounds like its changing size but it’s not. And it has a crickets chirping thing that blends well with my tinnitus. Etuk Ubong – “Purpose of Creation”

Rich – “A remix of something from the 80’s” – Spacey. .  .   .    .      .  Aural surgery. Teen Wolf? Love the late bass pads. Laurie Anderson, “Big Science” Arca Remix – Fine ending.

  1. Chico Buarque is fantastic.A real living legend on Portuguese culture.
The lyrics on “Construction” are a very sophisticated composition. One where each verse is a “reorganization” of the first one telling a fantastic story of a construction builder’s suicide.
Buarque’s family wrote the official Portuguese dictionary.Family of intellectuals.
